FSL Community’s Response to Sexual Assault

Posted Monday, August 31, 2020 @ 11:28 AM

In early July, concerns of sexual assault in the fraternity/sorority community came to the attention of the Office of Fraternity and Sorority Life. Within a couple weeks, student leaders within the community had put together multiple meetings and educational programs, targeted at educating our student population and working together on realistic solutions.

The Greek Council, which represents all four councils and all chapters in the fraternity/sorority community, was instrumental in organizing some of these programs. After holding a program on “How to Be an Ally” and “Mental Health on Campus,” the Council hosted a panel discussion on sexual assault. They brought in speakers from a variety of University offices, including Victim Services, Green Dot, Care Services, Office of Institutional Equity including Title IX, and Criminal Investigation Division of the UCF Police Department. A lot was learned through this programming, including that more education on these topics is certainly needed. Greek Council continues to work with the Fraternity and Sorority Life office to brainstorm ideas for educating the community.

The UCF Interfraternity Council also made a statement addressing the concerns. Among their response, they are working to implement Green Dot training for every member and promoting mental health resources to the community. They have also added a new Director of Wellness position and applications are currently open.

This work is ongoing and the Fraternity and Sorority Life community is committed to making our organizations safe and welcoming places for all UCF students.
